Ireland’s Potato

When I heard that New York Fries might be entering the Hong Kong market, I was going NUTS.

That was, until I found out about Ireland’s Potato. They serve some serious made-to-order fries and apparently, they are also very serious about their potato. Here’s their slogan:

“There are two things in the world that can’t be joked: 1) Marriage and 2) Potato”

I dunno man … as much as I appreciate their attitude towards their product, and the fact that there might be some truth to the slogan, it just doesn’t resonate with me. Its one thing to try and be all cute and funny with a slogan … then again, I wiki’d the name and found out the name was based on a famine in Ireland, where the Irish people were so dependant on potato that everything went fubar when sheetz hit the fan … nevermind, back to the food …

During rush hour, expect to wait about 15 minutes, but its definitely well worth the wait. I hear the hotdog’s not great, but if you’re only got HKD 55 bucks with you, treat yourself to the Ireland’s Potato Special Cheese Fries and the Chicken Nuggets. Even if it means, you’re walking home.

You’ll thank me.

Unfortunately though, I also downed a 750ml bottle of water soon after. MSG overload? I think so. But hey, you can’t have it both ways.

Here’s what I’d like to say to New York Fries if they’re planning to enter Hong Kong: umm, think again.

  1. Irelands’ Potato?

Being a native of Ireland I can confirm their slogan is wholly unrelated to anything to do with Irishness. It’s a new one on me.
As for the chips; They look and taste nothing like those from back home (Ireland). For one – we remove the skin whereas on these the skin remains. Are they even cleaned? And where’s the Salt-n-Vinegar!

Irelands’ Potato? More like “Foreigners’ Potato”

  2. lol, thanks for the response Michael … I still have no clue why they chose the name … as for the chips, … I wish I’ve had the real deal so I have something to compare with. So I suppose Ireland is known for their chips then? apologies for my ignorance in advance!

Lastly, ditto re: salt n vinegar … having spent a significant part of my life in Canada, I’ll agree to that … 🙂

  3. these fries are not bad at all, i’ve tried it when i was in hk.. just wondering are they very popular in hong kong?
    they r offering franchise?

  4. Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the comment. They’re relatively new to HK I think … I believe the shop in my post is the first and only in the city at the moment, and was established about 6-9 months ago? Not sure whether its really popular in HK yet, since they only have one shop, but if queues are any indications to go by, you’d have to wait in line for at least 15-20 minutes during rush hour … and they’re packed everyday of the week! They seem to be offering franchise … you can find their info on their website. If you’re thinking of investing, I wouldn’t mind some free fries you know … 🙂

    • Hey Kelly … that’s odd. I was in contact with him late last year … I would suggest just going onto their website and shoot them an email: http://www.irelandspotato.com/ … I might have his number, will send it to you if I find it. Good luck!

And yes, still long line-ups there every day! Crazy.
