Hong Kong Old Restaurant (香港老飯店)

If you’re looking for authentic Shanghainese food in Hong Kong, this is the place to visit. There are 2 branches, one in North Point (Hong Kong Island) and the other in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon). My folks think the TST branch serve better food, and since we’ve hardly ever been back to the other restaurant, I can’t tell you if my parents are right or not … they probably are.

As you can probably tell from the name, they’ve been around for a while. There are plenty of Shanghainese restaurant in town – another notable one is Ye Shanghai – but this one seems to have more variety and the decor and everything is less pretentious. I’m in it for the food ONLY.

If you ever feel like splurging a little, I would highly recommend their shark’s fin soup. At over HKD 2,000 per pot which serves about 10+, they don’t come cheap, but its well worth it.

Tomokazu Japanese Restaurant (友和日本料理)

Just had a feast at one of my dad’s favorite restaurant, Tomokazu Japanese Restaurant (友和日本料理). Its been around for at least 20 years and is frequented by lots of celebrities and socialites (not that I really care) … but that says something about the quality of its food. Personally, I think they are one of a few Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong that serve the freshest seafood directly from Japan.

I’ll let the photos do the talking.

There are quite a few other “fancier” Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong, but a lot of people return to Tomokazu because its portion is bigger and their menu is reasonably priced. Their also more authentic than what you might find at Wasabisabi, where they serve “fusion Japanese” food … and at ridiculous prices. Then there’s Nobu at the InterContinental, of course, which is in its own league.

Kau Kee (九記) on Gough Street

One of my favorite “fastfood” restaurant in town is Kau Kee (九記) on Gough Street, where they serve the best beef noodle soup. I say “fastfood” because during rush hour, especially during lunch, don’t expect to be able to sit and chat with your buddies. You sit, order, eat and leave within 15 minutes and if you don’t, the folks working there will make you feel uncomfortable. And they aren’t shy about their manners (or lack of) – afterall, no matter how rude they are, people still come back. How much money they make depends on the turnover and boy, do they make a lot of money.

Kau Kee has been around for half a century (!) and the guy running the show now is the son of the founder. Local celebrities (including Daniel Wu, apparently a regular) visit the place quite often, as do tourists mostly from around the world.

So why’s this place so good? Well, let’s just say the beef broth is the best I’ve ever tasted (I’m not sure if they’ve added any MSG – I’d like to think they don’t). There are only a few items to choose from the menu, which I guess is why they’re able to keep the quality so high and consistent.

Basically, there’s beef noodle soup and curry beef noodle soup with your choice of noodle (河粉, 伊麵, and 粗麵). Unfortunately, the portions are quite small and one bowl is hardly ever enough. That is why when my partners and I go, we’d get plain noodle on its own and plain beef brisket on its own (see photo).

They don’t come cheap as far as beef noodles are concerned. Plain noodle + plain beef brisket + a can of Coke will set you back HKD 70 … well, its not bad, but its definitely not cheap.

If you go during lunch or dinner time, expect to wait in line for 15 minutes.

P.S. If you get a chance, try the curry. Its a little heavier (yes, heavier than it already is!), but the 咖哩牛筋伊麵 or 粗麵 is really good because these 2 types of noodle absorbs the curry soup and makes for a completely different experience.

Old-fashioned Barber Shop on Hollywood Road

Not exactly a food blog, but an interesting find nonetheless.

I was walking along Hollywood Road and decided to walk up the stairs on Shing Wong Road when I came across this old-school “Shanghainese” barber shop. Wash, cut and shave for some HKD 50 dollars. The shop had 2 seats and as you can see in the photo, it was PACKED, with another gentleman waiting to get his service.

It wasn’t even a proper building, it was in a hut; I’m glad the government hasn’t torn this one down.

Bonheur on Bonham Strand

My first time visiting Bonheur was Christmas Eve last year with a group of close friends. The set dinner + service charge was about HKD 800 but it was worth every penny.

The restaurant has been around for 3 years already and has attracted a legion of food buffs from around the city. One of the things I love most about the restaurant? No corkage fee on any wine and champagne you bring. I also love how the place is not pretentious like most other gourmet restaurants in town. It has humble decor – take it as a sign they don’t need nice interior design to attract customers; its all about FOOD. Its located on the 6th floor of a building in Sheung Wan – and even so, if you want to dine there, expect to book a week in advance. Walk-ins would take up to 1.5 hours (45 minutes if you’re lucky!) and all of this is done through word-of-mouth!

That in itself is already a testament to its quality.

Green Cottage Vietnamese Restaurant

Green Cottage / Yin Ping Vietnamese Restaurant is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the city; the other being Nha Trang (芽莊越式料理). Having never visited Vietnam before, I don’t think I’m in a position to comment on the authenticity of their dishes – especially after spending time in Toronto and Los Angeles, where some potent Phở is served – I’m frankly very confused as to what is authentic Vietnamese food.

I visited the original Green Cottage (清亭越南菜館) on Cannon Street 10 years ago when they were only a small cafe. Back then, after your orders are taken, the waiter would reach up to the clothesline above our heads, attach the order onto the clips and throw them directly into the kitchen along that line. It was an odd process, but a memorable one. Their specialty was and still is their famed butter chicken wings (pictured) among many, many other dishes.

They’ve done very well for themselves since, moving across the street from where they used to be into a bigger space. All of this success, however, is not without family feud. The brothers went their separate ways and while one kept “Green Cottage”, the other established “Yin Ping” right next to the former.

Last year, the brothers called truce, made up and decided to work together again moving into yet another even bigger location (current Jaffe Road restaurant) aptly named “Green Cottage / Yin Ping Vietnamese Restaurant” (清亭燕萍越南菜館)。
